Oxted to East Grinstead - Oxted Station and Oxted Viaduct
1st January 1998 to 31st December 2008

Railways came to this area relatively late, and it was not until 10 March 1884 that the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway Company opened the line that ran from Oxted to East Grinstead.

Subsequently a junction was created south of Hurst Green (then a simple railway halt taking a maximum of two carriages), and a line was constructed from the Hurst Green junction south through Edenbridge (called Edenbridge Town from 1 May 1896), Hever, Cowden and Ashurst to join with the existing line from East Grinstead through Withyham to Tunbridge Wells. This line opened to passengers on 1 October 1888 and is covered in a separate collection.

Changing angle slightly this shot shows the whole length of the building. The ticket office had just been refurbished at the time the picture was taken. It does actually say Oxted under the double arrow symbol, but the legend has almost totally faded. 14.09.2008

Looking south at the main entrance with the taxi rank vacant. A gate on the left provides access to the northbound platform when the ticket office is closed. 14.09.2008

Changing angle and still looking south this photo shows the full length of the building. Over a hundred years earlier, in 1898, the map shows the station name as Limpsfield, and there were only a few buildings in the vicinity of what was then New Oxted. 14.09.2008

A final shot looking directly west which is unfortunately slightly obstructed by parked cars, an almost permanent situation. 14.09.2008

OK, I realise that this is the worst picture in the whole collection, but someone had inconsiderately placed a builder's hoarding in front of the eastern entrance to the station, which is via a subway. I will retake the picture next time I am passing, but in the meantime this gives a general idea of the facility. 14.09.2008

Looking north from Oxted Station. The huge chalk ridge of the North Downs can be seen in the distance and the railway tunnels through it to emerge south of Woldingham. The platforms are staggered, hence the need for the path to signal OD10. 18.05.2008

A second view north, this time from Platform 1. Signal OD10 permits northbound departures from the southbound platform, via the crossover, and the same points permit shunts back from the northbound line into the southbound platform. 18.05.2008

The same view taken 10 years ago in 1998. Compare this picture with the previous photograph. In 2008 there has been a vast increase in the signal and train protection apparatus, including the associated cabling. 09.10.1998

Turning round, the staggered platforms can be seen, with the northbound Platform 1 extending further north. In the early years this arrangement left room for a goods yard access at the southern end of this platform. 18.05.2008

The northern end of Oxted Station is frankly depressing. Whilst the need to prevent anti-social behaviour and to provide security is acknowledged the stark fence is not a pleasant environment. It would have helped if it had been supplied in green to match the background. Perhaps it is a sign of the times.18.05.2008

This is what the northern end of Oxted Station looked like in 1998. A concrete wall is not pleasant to look at, but at least it is not as oppressive as the current security fencing. 09.10.1998
